Jane and Jason Disney Engagement Session

These guys are friends of mine so when I heard they were getting married I told them that I would shoot their engagement session as a wedding present. That way, there’s no chance of me giving them any lame gifts like a gravy boat or something. But as stubborn as I knew they were, they paid me anyways. So now I gotta go out and get them a gift. Bad move if you ask me, I’m horrible at gift giving, haha. Fortunately, (commencing tooting of own horn) I’m pretty good at taking pictures.

So anyways, I was pretty stoked when I heard they wanted to shoot their engagement session at Disneyland. Although, I was a little caught off guard when they told me that they had picked out a few outfits for the shoot. Yes, it was them, not I, who chose the outfits. I’m not that mean of a photographer, haha, j/p guys. In all honesty, they were very cute and fit in so good at Disney that they were probably mistaken as cast members. They were a photographer’s dream when it came to enthusiasm and cooperation. Congratulations guys, I wish I could make to your P.I./Hawaii wedding adventure. Anyways, enough talking, on to the pics:

So after tons of setbacks our schedules finally allowed for a photoshoot with the Torderas. Unfortunately they were only available during the middle of the day so I had to work with some harsh lighting. Not exactly prime conditions but I think I did o.k. I kinda just stuck to some of the shaded areas. They were a great family to work with and I had a lot of fun with them. Here’s my favs from their shoot.

Motevo Lexus and Nikita Esco – Poster

Mike from Motevo Mobile asked me to shoot his car for a poster that Nikita will be signing and handing out at SEMA this year. Not having shot a car in a while, I was eager to get back into the saddle. Not to mention it’ll be cool seeing something I shot printed out poster size and passed out to the masses. Mike wanted to minimize the risk of damaging the car since SEMA is around the corner. We decided to shoot it at their warehouse. Definately not the best place to shoot a black car because it was a bit dim, but I made it work. The white walls did a great job of making sure you could still see detail in the black paint. Nikita did a great job modeling and was very easy to work with. All in all I was pretty happy with the results. Keep an eye out for a full shoot of Mike’s Lexus. Be sure to visit the Motevo booth at SEMA this year for a copy of the poster. Don’t forget to have Nikita sign it for you. Tell her I said, “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts”, she’ll know what I mean.

Daytona Blue Nissan 350Z : Owner – Tyler Klee

I had the opportunity to shoot Tyler’s Daytona Blue Nissan 350Z last week. He drove all the way from Temecula, Ca so the pressure was on again to make his trip worthwhile. I didn’t want him to drive all the way out here just to shoot in a parking garage so we went out into the hills of Santiago Canyon for this shoot. You might recognize the location from a couple of my other shoots but I love how wide open and picturesque it is there. The best part is that the location is fairly secluded and I haven’t been hassled by any authorities yet. That in itself is worth the drive out.

I had originally planned to utilize my strobes while there was still daylight but we started shooting at a perfect time and the light on the car was great. Nothing wrong with a little natural light now and again. I was really happy with how the front quarter rig shot came out.

2009 Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is back and I want one. Ask any car enthusiast about the GT-R and the majority of them will say the same. With insane twin-turbo V-6 power, edgy looks, and a cult-like following rivaling that of the Beatles, the 2009 Nissan GT-R lives up to the hype.

A 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 powers the GT-R. With 480 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, you’d better have your inhaler handy.

The simple-yet-sporty interior complements the feel of the Nissan GT-R. And just to show you this car was meant to motor, the speedometer was arranged in such a way that the 140-mph tick mark is where you would normally see 60 mph on most cars. I guess the designers figured you wouldn’t be spending a whole lot of time under 100 mph.

The GT-R’s exterior styling causes mixed feelings. Some people hate it and others love it. I, for one, like the edgy design. I think it’s one of those looks that grow on you.

The Nissan supercoupe’s 4-wheel Brembo disc brakes with 15-inch rotors bring everything to a screeching halt when needed, while the gold calipers provide a little eye candy in the process.

Well-bolstered leather and suede bucket seats do a great job of keeping your butt in place on those curvy mountain roads. If you’re wondering about space in the back seat, the GT-R probably isn’t for you. However, if you’re wondering if they put dual subwoofers in between the rear seats, then you’ve come to the right place.

The 2009 Nissan GT-R is rollin’ on DUBS! Not just your regular run-of-the-mill dubs, but super-lightweight, forged-aluminum dubs. 20 x 9.5 inches in front and 20 x 10.5 inches at the rear.

Purists out there might scoff at the fact that there’s no clutch pedal in the GT-R. But the 6-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission is responsive and probably shifts faster than I do. It gets extra cool points for automatically blipping the throttle to match revs on downshifts.

The rear end of the Nissan GT-R is iconic. The dual circular taillights are instantly recognizable. I found this out as I was almost run off the road multiple times by people snapping pictures from their camera phones.

Starting at around $70,000, this car is an awesome deal considering it’ll decimate sports cars twice its price. Unfortunately, $70k is not going to happen on this photographer’s salary. Not to mention dealers are throwing on a pretty gnarly markup. So until my kidney sells on Ebay, or the price drops because they use this car in the next Fast and the Furious installment, these photos will have to suffice.

BJ hit me up for a shoot because he’s lookin to sell his 350Z and he wanted some good shots before he let it go. He specifically asked me to focus on certain rig shots so thats what I did. Post processing took a bit longer but I try to accomodate my customers as best I can. The clean Nismo front bumper and the 19 inch Work Meister S1′s really set this car off. All in all, the shoot went great. BJ’s a good guy and was easy to work with. Whoever ends up buying his car is gonna be really happy.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi VS. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

To say that there’s a rivalry between the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X is a bit of an understatement. But let’s just say they’re not on speaking terms at the moment. As an automotive enthusiast, I think that rivalry is good. It raises the bar and we get bigger and better toys to play with. Take the current incarnations of these two vehicles. A lot of people are saying that they are the best they have ever been. Having driven both vehicles I can honestly say…they’re both pretty fun. But what do you expect from a photographer. I’m not a professional driver, nor am I an automotive editor. I do know my way around a camera however. So I say let’s bring these cars to my home court. Let’s have a little Photo Faceoff. It’s o.k. to be superficial in this situation. Succumb to your “OOoohhh Shiiiiinnnnny” reflex. Check out the rear ends, gawk at the headlights, and when you’re done, cast your vote for the winner of this Photo Faceoff.

From a 2003 Nissan 350Z to a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3

I’ve always been into cars. When I purchased my 2003 Nissan 350z 5 years ago, I was ecstatic. I had finally gotten my dream car. The Nissan 350z’s 287 horsepower V6 engine was solid and it handled great. The best part was it had the looks to match. I told myself I wouldn’t modify it but sure enough, a couple of years later, I added a subtle Nismo body kit and gunmetal Enkei rims. When the “mod-bug” bites it doesn’t play around.

Then last year I got married. And instead of the “mod-bug” I got bit by the “baby-bug”. The 350Z was a great car but not exactly the best family car out there. I needed something more practical but at the same time I didn’t want to sacrifice performance. I needed something that was fun to drive.

I looked into getting an Mitsubishi Evolution IX because I figured a sedan would be more practical. Plus, I knew how fun they were to drive thanks to a recent trip to the dealer. Unfortunately, there were only a few left in all of Southern California and the dealers were actually trying to mark them up.

While driving home from the Mitsubishi dealership disappointed, I passed a Mazda dealership. I remembered reading something about how the Mazdaspeed 3 was such a “bang for the buck” car. So I stopped by for a closer examination. I’ve always liked hatchbacks, so that was an immediate plus. But my initial impressions was that it was o.k. but not as sexy as the 350Z. I did however love the fact that it could seat 5. I was also impressed with how much storage space it had with the back seats folded down. Perfect for a family man as well as a photographer with a ton of gear. The front seats felt good and had great bolstering. Ultimately, the thing that would make up my mind was the test drive. The turbocharged 2.3 liter I4 engine had great power. I found out later that it was putting down 263 HP and 280 TQ. It literally pushed me back in my seat when I stepped on the pedal. Responsive steering and crisp handling made for a very nimble vehicle. To top it all off, the loaded Grand Touring model they had on the lot was going for about 26K. It was perfect for me. I ended up driving it home the next night.

As far as modifications, I’ve already added powdercoated Mazdaspeed 6 rims, limo tint, Ipod integration, and an intake system from Cobb Tuning. It may not look as sexy as a 350Z, but it’s not ugly, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Enjoy the photos.

Mel specifically asked to shoot at this location because he liked the way the green contrasted with light colors such as silver. One problem I find with this place is lighting. There are tall street lamps up and down the road, alternating sides. You really have to pick your positioning carefully because if you don’t you get distracting glares and shadows. I fixed this by bringing my own lighting into the equation. By lighting the car with a strobe and then combining it with a shot of the background, I was able to get the car exactly how I wanted it.
